Borderlands unveiling at E3 last year was a mixed bag of innovation and tradition. Demo attendees were perched on their toes as 2K Sports and Gearbox walked through a revolutionary weapons customization system allowing for nearly limitless combinations. Everything else about the game, including the visuals, were a chip off the old “been there, done that” block.
After nearly a year of silence from 2K I had all but forgotten about Borderlands. Now as E3 approaches the silence has been broken and Borderlands emerges with a new coat of paint.
Gearbox has completely reworked Borderlands’ visual style into a blend of cell-shaded animation and more photo-realistic imagery. The decision has given Borderlands a unique visual appeal and likely freed up the processor some for that sweet weapons system.
