Downton Abbey Season 5 has traversed the Atlantic to make its U.S. premiere tonight on Sunday, January 4, long after it first aired in the U.K. on BBC. When we last left Downton Abbey in the Season 4 finale, Lady Edith took off abroad with Lady Rosamund to give up her child for adoption. The child is born and at the start of Season 5 is being cared for by a tenant farmer’s family. Lady Edith is having troubles getting to see the child and assist in the child’s upbringing.
The big shocker in the Season 4 finale was the death of Green and Anna’s suspicion’s that Bates may have been involved in it. This story will carry forward into Season 5, as will Lord Gillingham’s courting of Lady Mary. He may finally find some success, though not without a few caveats.
The official synopsis for Downton Abbey Season 5 Episode 1 reads, “When a working-class prime minister is elected, new ideas about class leave Robert feeling snubbed. But Thomas, unchanged, bullies Baxter into a corner. Edith plays with fire.”
Joining Downton Abbey for its fifth season are newcomers Richard E. Grant, Anna Chancellor, and Rade Sherbedgia. Some familiar faces from the past will also return including Harriet Walter as Lady Shackleton and Peter Egan as Lord Flintshire.
Downton Abbey Season 5 Episode 1 will premiere in the U.S. tonight at a start time of 9/8c on PBS Masterpiece.
