Disney Channel has a solid hit on its hands with Girl Meets World and has swiftly renewed the popular new tween series for a second season that will air in 2015. They did so with only five of 21 total Season 1 episodes having aired to date.
Girl Meets World is a continuation of Boy Meets World set 14 years later. Original series stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel as Cory and Topanga, respectively, return to guide their daughter, Riley (Rowan Blanchard) and her friend, Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) through the often difficult trials and tribulations of junior high school.
The Girl Meets World premiere in late June triggered a landslide of nostalgia-fueled chatter online and drew solid ratings to the tune of 5.2 million total viewers for Disney Channel, despite the episode having been made available online well in advance of its on-air premiere. Since its debut, the series has averaged roughly 4.7 million viewers on the Walt Disney Channel mobile app alone, and scattered cameos from Boy Meets World secondary cast members continue to keep viewers on their toes and checking in.
Disney Channel originally ordered 13 episodes of Girl Meets World last year but bumped that order up to 21 total episodes this past January as hype and media exposure built up. The series has been so successful that a companion clothing line is currently being launched at Kohl’s to take advantage of the upcoming holiday shopping season.
Production on Girl Meets World Season 2 is expected to get underway in November with an anticipated summer 2015 premiere.
Catch the next episode of Girl Meets World this upcoming Friday at 8:30pm EST on Disney Channel.
