One of the more intriguing aspects of AMC’s Better Call Saul is the potential to rope in beloved characters from Breaking Bad into its own spin-off. The latest evidence suggests that all Breaking Bad characters are fair game, even those such as Walter White who perished at the conclusion of his own show.
Executive producer Peter Gould recently chatted with New York Daily News and shed some light on the mysterious Better Call Saul timeline. Previous comments by Gould and fellow showrunner Vince Gilligan indicated that the series was being designed to take place before the events of Breaking Bad. That appears to still be the case, but isn’t the complete picture.
Gould and Gilligan are opting to use a timeline that will allow them to bring back any of the deceased characters from Breaking Bad by setting Better Call Saul before, during and after the events of its parent series. Whether your favorite character that you would love to cameo was Tuco Salamanca or Walter White, all characters are theoretically in play to return.
“One of the great things about having a timeline which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad,” stated Gould. “That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad.”
In regards to Breaking Bad characters aside from Saul and Mike taking over the new show, don’t expect it to happen. “We want to make a show that stands on it own, is its own story and is a brand extension,” added Gould.
“We think we have a story that is worth making,” Gould continued. “We could never dream of the kind of success that Breaking Bad had and the love we got from the fans. But at a certain point you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it.”
Better Call Saul was recently bumped from its original November 2014 release date back to spring 2015 where it will piggyback off of The Walking Dead Season 5.
