J.J. Abrams has managed to keep Star Trek 2 almost entirely under wraps since production began in January. That’s why it’s surprising to see the first scoop from the set come in the form of Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto in the midst of shooting intense action scenes.
Cumberbatch is on the wrong end of a Spock Vulcan nerve pinch which further confirms his character falls on the villainous end of the moral scale, even if we don’t know the character’s name. Apparently his character, who may or may not be Khan depending on if earlier rumors are to be believed, will escape Spock’s signature move and counter the pointy-eared Vulcan with a move of his own.
Uhura, played by the lovely Zoe Saldana, is on the same set and has a phaser ready to fire as she approaches the Cumberbatch character. It’s hard to tell where in the sequence this falls, but I’m guessing before Spock and Cumberbatch have at it.
The set is being described as a “Space Barge” with green screen filling the entire background where a digitally rendered planet or other environment will be created in post-production. The images were likely snapped from afar, much like set images from Star Trek where Kirk (Chris Pine) and Sulu (John Cho) fought on top of a space device.
The entire Enterprise crew and even Bruce Greenwood are returning for Star Trek 2, the still unnamed sequel that will transport into theaters on May 17, 2013. Joining Cumberbatch as new cast additions for Abrams’ second stab at Trek are Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
