Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen continues to enact revenge on critics by surpassing the $300 million mark at the domestic and worldwide box office.
Monday’s ticket receipts showed Transformers 2 had hit $299.8 million domestically while overseas crossed $300 million the same day. Factoring in Tuesday’s as-of-yet announced numbers should push Michael Bay’s blockbuster into the $610 million range for worldwide ticket sales.
Bruno starring Sacha Baron Cohen hopes to dethrone Transformers 2 this weekend but will have a tough time eating into Transformers’ target audience due to a hard R-rating. After The Hangover recently crossed $200 million there is no reason why Bruno, which is quite funny at times, cannot top Borat’s $128.5 million gross.
The real threat against Autobots and Decepticons will come a week from today when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince casts its PG-rated magic. Early ticket sales are already pacing ahead of Transformers 2’s which puts the Wednesday through Sunday five-day opening record set by Transformers 2 may be in jeopardy.
I’m pulling for the boy, err, practically a man wizard to pull off the upset.
