Wii U Getting GameCube Controller Adapter for Super Smash Bros.

Wii U Getting GameCube Controller Adapter for Super Smash Bros.Nintendo will be releasing an officially licensed adapter for Wii U that will enable gamers to use their GameCube controllers with at minimum the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Wii U game.

The adapter announcement was made via Twitter this afternoon in a low key manner. A lone image was posted showcasing the adapter, a dongle device that plugs into Wii U and include ports for four wired GameCube controllers. The controller shown with the device has a Super Smash Bros. logo on it, suggesting the device will come with a new GameCube controller that looks to be exactly the same as legacy ones. That’s potentially bad news for gamers who already own four GameCube controllers.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about this device besides the obvious such as price and a release date. We don’t know if it will work with the official Nintendo wireless Wavebird controllers for GameCube consisting of a small transmitting device that plugged into the controller wire port. We also don’t know what Nintendo plans on packaging with the device, and whether it will work with other Wii U games like the recently released Mario Kart 8.

Hopefully E3 next week will shed some more like on this intriguing new first-party Wii U accessory device.
