Nintendo is aiming low – in price, that is – to compete against the November launch of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 next generation gaming consoles with last year’s Wii U.
Taking a page from their 3DS strategy, Nintendo will shave $50 off the price of the Wii U Deluxe console starting September 20, bringing it down to $299.99. That is $100 cheaper than Sony will be charging for PS4, and $200 cheaper than Microsoft’s Xbox One.
Along with the price drop announcement made to coincide with PAX Prime 2013, Nintendo has announced The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD will be first released on September 20 as a digital download game, with the physical disc game coming two weeks later on October 4. The disc game will feature gold-foiled packaging, and both versions will retail for $49.99.
Combining the Wii U price drop and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD digital release, Nintendo will be offering an exclusive The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle on September 20 for $299.99. This bundle includes a Black Wii U console; a GamePad controller with exclusive gold lettering, gold Hyrule crest and game symbols; a Legend of Zelda series digital book that traces the franchise’s history through words and artwork; and a code to download and play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD immediately upon purchase. This bundle will not include NintendoLand because of the Zelda game.
