Weekend Box Office: Tropic Thunder Chokes Death Race, House Bunny

The weekend box office estimates for August 22-24 are in and like last week, Tropic Thunder put the clamp down on the competition.

Facing a potential dethroning from newcomers Death Race and The House Bunny, Thunder managed to only see a 38% drop from its opening a week ago. That was enough for a $16.1 million take and the top spot for the second weekend in a row, and a spot alongside The Dark Knight and Iron Man as the only films this summer to stay at #1 for two consecutive weeks.

Death Race turned in a disappointing $12.3 million performance despite heaving advertising and Jason Statham in the lead. Also disappointing, at least for LucasFilm, is The Clone Wars $5.6 million take that will likely see it exit theaters well before the television show begins.

On the bright side, The Dark Knight’s $10.3 million purse bring its total up to $489.2 million. Next stop: half a billion dollars domestically.

The top ten rounds out as follows:

  • 1. Tropic Thunder: $16.1m
  • 2. The House Bunny: $15.1m
  • 3. Death Race: $12.3m
  • 4. The Dark Knight: $10.3m
  • 5. Star Wars: The Clone Wars: $5.6
  • 6. Pineapple Express: $5.6m
  • 7. Mirrors: $4.9m
  • 8. The Longshots: $4.3m
  • 9. Mamma Mia!: $4.3m
  • 10. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: $4m

Next week sees Babylon A.D. square off against Disaster Movie.
