Weekend Box Office “Obsessed” with Beyonce

The last tame weekend box office freshman class before next weekend kicks off the big boys went game, set and match to Sony Screen Gems’ Obsessed.

The thriller starring Beyonce Knowles, Idris Elba and Ali Larter blew away all expectation and raked in an impressive $28.5 million from Fri-Sun. That was more than enough to knock 17 Again and its $11.7 million take into second place.

The battle between a pair of other newcomers, Fighting and The Soloist, went to the former who outperformed expectations with $11.4 million. The Soloist’s $9.7 million draw has to be considered a disappointment considering the star draw of Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx.

Disney’s documentary Earth scored an impressive $8.6 million which gives it the third best ever opening for a documentary. Factoring in ticket sales from Earth’s opening on Wednesday and the cumulative total stands at $14.2 million.

Here’s the complete top ten weekend box office results for April 24-26:

  • 1. Obsessed: $28.5m
  • 2. 17 Again: $11.665m
  • 3. Fighting: $11.441m
  • 4. The Soloist: $9.715m
  • 5. Earth: $8.554m
  • 6. Monsters vs Aliens: $8.524m
  • 7. State of Play: $6.891m
  • 8. Hannah Montana: The Movie: $6.372m
  • 9. Fast & Furious: $6.062m
  • 10. Crank High Voltage: $2.4m

The summer movie season kicks off next Friday with the release of Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That should slaughter the only real competition, Warner’s comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. Then again, never underestimate the power of a well-marketed chick flick with big names in its corner.
