Warner Bros. film group President Jeff Robinov has some ideas about how to move forward with another Green Lantern film and find success where the original failed.
In speaking with Hero Complex, Robinov said the studio learned from their execution mistakes with Green Lantern and, should they chose to move forward with Green Lantern 2, would go the “edgier and darker” route with more action. Also of importance to Warner executives is to find a way to better balance the action between Earth and outer space.
In other words, Warner’s fix for the Green Lantern franchise is to emulate Christopher Nolan’s blueprint for The Dark Knight Batman films rather than continue in the footsteps of Iron Man whose success is why we got a Green Lantern film at all. A story idea for Green Lantern 2 already exists from the original’s writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, but that was developed before the original was released. This idea, whatever it is, would need to be adjusted or scrapped altogether in order to meet the “edgier and darker” demand.
Another issue Robinov addressed was Green Lantern director Martin Campbell. Apparently Warner Bros. wasn’t thrilled with Campbell’s effort on Green Lantern and would just assume move forward without him. The problem, though, is that Campbell has an option in his contract for the sequel. Warner would need to offer it to him first with an asterisk stating, “please don’t accept this and go away.”
The future of Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ movies is hazy compared to Disney and Marvel’s outlook. Next summer The Dark Knight Rises will complete the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy and make a ton of cash. The following summer will see Superman: Man of Steel reboot a franchise for the second time in the past several years. Beyond that, the only potential new films are Green Lantern 2; The Flash, which according to Robinov has a great script already; and if Warner Bros. really wanted to go for it, The Justice League.
