The Donnie Darko direct-to-video sequel S. Darko will be joined on June 16 by Warner and New Line’s The Cell 2 in a simultaneous DVD and Blu-ray Disc release.
Like the original, The Cell 2 will chase The Cusp with a female heroine (Tessie Santiago) who must enter the fantasy world of his brain to pinpoint his real world location. But if she dies in his head, she’s toast for real.
The Cell 2 is coming to Blu-ray Disc with a 1.85:1 1080p transfer and lossless 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio. Retail pricing has been set at $34.99.
BD-Live connectivity will be included and Warner promises exclusive online extras. Packaged onto the disc will be a solitary behind the scenes featurette.
The Cell 2 is the first title on Warner’s huge upcoming Blu-ray Disc slate revealed yesterday via a buy five, get one free promotion that further validates the list. The original Cell starring Jennifer Lopez is not on the list but I’d have a hard time imagining Warner not wanting to release both films simultaneously on Blu-ray, especially given The Cell’s visual flair tailor made to look wicked in high-def.
We’ll find out soon enough one way or the other.
