Warner and Fox Watchmen Settlement is “Close”

The January 20 “D-Day” verdict from U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess’ deciding the fate of The Watchmen is right around the corner but it may not be necessary after all.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources indicate Fox and Warner are “close” to a settlement that will bring The Watchmen’s rights battle to a close. Neither studio is willing to comment, of course.

Last week, Warner was pressing to move up the January 20 date in which the judge would either side with Warner and allow the March release or side with Fox and place an injunction on the release. Now Warner has backed off on that request offering further proof a settlement is on the table and talks are moving in the right direction.

This news comes after a weekend when Warner began a spendy TV campaign for The Watchmen that saw ads run during all the NFL playoff games as well as — ironically — during Fox’s 24 two-hour season debut.

The Watchmen’s March release must be all but in the can at this point. Warner continues to confidently spend marketing dollars to pump up anticipation and has too much to lose if an injunction were to be called. Lets put this fiasco to rest and enjoy the movie we’re all foaming at the mouth to see.
