Vin Diesel continues to be the only source of information for news and images from the set of Riddick, the third film in the franchise starring Diesel as a Furyan outlaw with glowing eyes. His latest batch released over the past week are the best yet, offering a first glimpse at who – and what – Riddick will be squaring off against.
The first image is of five Mercs who are dispatched to capture and bring Riddick in for a bounty. There will be more Mercs in the film, including one in particular featured in the next image, that Riddick will fend off by any means necessary. The Mercs are well-armed and trained, though I suspect they will be no match for Riddick when push comes to shove.
Here’s Katee Sackoff of Battlestar Galactica fame, playing one of the Mercs, Dahl, that Riddick will square off against. It’s great to see Sackoff getting a relatively high profile role, and she should prove a worthy adversary for Riddick with that intense stare. Noted Diesel about Sackoff just after she wrapped her final scene, “Not all Mercs are spineless… in fact some are downright sexy… GRRRR…,” Diesel said. “The talent she brought to the new Chronicles of Riddick… added magic to the film and the process.”
The final image is what will be responsible for the R-rated Pitch Black vibe that both Diesel and writer/director David Twohy have promised. Known as “mud demons” at this time, these creatures of the night will prove an unexpected surprise for the Mercs while they are squarely focused on tracking down Riddick.
Riddick is still in production in Montreal, Canada. A release date has yet to be set, though Universal is expected to unspool it sometime in 2013.
