Fox’s Unstoppable behind the star power of Denzel Washington and Star Trek’s Chris Pine sped to an estimated brisk $8.1 million at the box office on Friday. If positive word of mouth can persist through Sunday, Unstoppable might find itself finishing the weekend somewhere in the range of $24 to $26 million.
The other big newcomer, Skyline, was expected to compete with Unstoppable but instead came in third with $4.7 million. Its weekend haul should finish in the neighborhood of $10 to $13 million which would be north of the modest $10 estimated budget. A sequel was greenlit well ahead of Skyline’s bow.
Second place went to Dreamworks’ Megamind with $7.9 million pushing its cumulative box office total to $67.6 million. The higher priced 3D showings combined with families hitting matinee showings could propel Megamind ahead of Unstoppable for the weekend’s top spot.
Paramount’s Morning Glory opened a couple days early on Wednesday and managed $3.1 million on Friday. It should finish the weekend around $10 million.
