The Fighter director David O. Russell chatted with Empire magazine recently to discuss his Oscar-nominated film as well as offer an update on where he stands with his adaptation of Sony and Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Playstation 3 video game into a feature-length film.
Russell shares that he is currently working on the Uncharted script and that he’s really excited for it. He doesn’t say how far along he is or when he expects to finish, but you’d have to think he wants to wrap it up soon and get production underway this summer for a summer 2012 release.
When asked if Drake’s love interest Elena would appear in the film he replies with a most definite “yes.” In fact, he’s fleshing out the character to make her more dimensional and robust next to Drake.
Empire goes on to tell Russell they’d love to see Amy Adams as Elena. Russell said he’d love that, but he’d love Scarlett Johansson in the role as well. Is he writing the role of Elena with Scarlett in mind? She does bear a physical resemblance to the character as depicted in the game.
In a previous MTV interview with Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter co-star spoke as if he’s already been cast as Nathan Drake and will be working with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci who would play relatives of Nathan. Yet in speaking with Empire, Russell says “I’d love Mark to be in it, I’d love Bob De Niro to be in it,” inferring that neither previously thought attached actor is a sure bet yet.
Those of you still championing for Nathan Fillion to land the Drake role are still hanging on by a thread. Anything can happen once studio executives, talent schedules and contract negotiations enter the picture.
