An old and young Jeff Bridges came together to help Tron Legacy easily win Friday at the box office with an estimated $18 million in ticket sales its opening day. The total includes $3.6 million from midnight showings and a boost from IMAX and 3D ticket prices. The sequel to 1981’s Tron should finish the weekend in the neighborhood of $45 million.
Coming in second on Friday was the CGI/live-action Yogi Bear with $4.7 million. The family-friendly film should pick up a little steam with matinee showings on Saturday and Sunday and come in around $15-$17 million through Sunday.
Third place went to The Fighter with $3.9 million while The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader took fourth with $3.7 million and Black Swan danced into fifth with $2.7 million off a scant 959 screens.
In addition to Tron Legacy, The Fighter, Black Swan and Yogi Bear was another newcomer, How Do You Know. It stumbled out the gate with $2.6 million and will probably not hit $10 million when the weekend is complete.
