Transformers 2 Ravages Weekend Box Office

Entering this past weekend, Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had a legitimate shot at toppling Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight’s five-day opening record. Though it came close, Batman and The Joker remain king of the blockbusters.

Weekend estimates put the Friday-Sunday box office receipts for Transformers 2 at $112 million. When the Thursday and Friday numbers are factored in, the five-day opening is a mountainous $201.2 million.

While breaking the $200 million barrier is a ginormous accomplishment for Transformers 2, The Dark Knight’s first five days were a hair better. During its Friday to Tuesday debut, TDK wrestled in a whopping $203.8 million.

Elsewhere at the weekend box office, The Proposal continues to win over girls and guys alike with an additional $18.5 million bringing its domestic total to $69 million. Breaking $100 million is certainly not out of the question and may even ignite sequel talk (The Rehearsal Dinner, maybe?)

The Hangover feels no ill effects from its wild ways with $17.2 million bringing its total to $183.2 million. In that case a sequel is already in the works. Pixar’s Up, not headed for a sequel anytime soon, crossed $250 million to surpass Star Trek as the highest grossing film this year. That is, until Revenge of the Fallen has another week or so at the box office.

The complete box office results for June 26-28 are as follows:

July 4th weekend will see two big new films square off a couple days early on Wednesday, July 1. In the crosshairs of adults is Michael Mann’s Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, while the kiddos will line up for Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 3D.
