Transformers 2 Box Office Takes Aim at The Dark Knight

The Autobots have shifted into fifth gear and nothing, not even a pummeling by critics across the board, can slow them down.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen added $36.7 million to its pile of loot on Friday bringing its three-day box office take to $126 million. Thursday’s total was an impressive $28.6 million after a record-breaking $60.7 million opening on Wednesday.

Anchored behind Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and ILM’s visual effects wizardry, Michael Bay’s Transformers 2 has a legitimate shot at toppling The Dark Knight’s five-day opening record of $203.7 million. It will need to average roughly $40 on Saturday and Sunday, a realistic possibility considering Friday’s total and the number of working folks who had to wait until the weekend for a viewing.

In comparison, the original Transformers film scored $155.4 million through its first five days at the box office. Revenge of the Fallen will have surpassed that total in four.

The only newcomer brave enough to challenge Transformers 2 this weekend, female-skewed My Sister’s Keeper with Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, brought in just over $5 million in ticket sales.

Check back tomorrow for the weekend box office returns and whether Transformers 2 beat The Dark Knight. Also, if you have not already, be sure to check out our Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen review.
