Steve Carell has been hinting about it for months and today NBC made it official. Michael Scott will stalk the cubicles at Dunder Mifflin for one more season only.
The departure of the character that holds the show together is timed with the expiration of Carell’s current contract that occurs at the end of next season. NBC must now decide whether to promote from within to fill Michael Scott’s shoes or bring in someone entirely new. Whichever route they take, The Office will look at lot different come season 8 in fall 2011.
The idea of Michael Scott having one season left to create some kind of legacy at Dunder Mifflin should provide ample opportunity to get The Office back on track after what many consider was a sub-par effort last season. I know I’ll be watching.
