Disney’s The Lone Ranger from director Gore Verbinski is counting on the star power of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer to help the project ride off into the box office golden sunset. Thanks to producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s Twitter generosity, we now have our first look at Hammer as John Reid aka The Lone Ranger, and Depp as his intricately costumed Native American sidekick, Tonto.
Hammer as The Lone Ranger looks exactly as you would expect the hero to; stoic, unwavered and, of course, properly masked. He’s ready to dole out some justice and look good doing so.
Depp, however, looks like a cross between a drunken Jack Sparrow with that headband and expression, and The Crow with that caked on makeup. It doesn’t help the visual of Depp as The Crow with an actual crow perched atop his scalp.
The Lone Ranger film will follow the exploits of the law man and his unlikely sidekick as they overcome their differences to become legendary. The production was originally put on hiatus by Disney in order to reel in production costs. With production well underway in New Mexico, look for The Lone Ranger to gallop into theaters next year on May 31, 2013.
