The Hobbit Trailer Reveals a Wonderfully Familiar Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit Trailer Reveals a Wonderfully Familiar Unexpected JourneyThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey trailer arrived right on cue this evening, bringing to life a now proven accurate leaked description that made the Internet rounds several days ago.

The trailer opens much as the film will with an older Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) telling Frodo (Elijah Wood) that there’s more to his past adventures than he had previously let on. This is a great new introduction by Peter Jackson and scribes Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro forge a visual link to The Lord of the Rings trilogy for those moviegoers unfamiliar with J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. The Ring and Gollum in the closing shots further cement the bond.

Once the trailer flashes to younger Bilbo (Martin Freeman), it quickly introduces thirteen dwarves, one-by-one, and the man they follow, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Galdalf (Ian McKellen) gets quite a few scenes including some action. Another familiar face in Cate Blanchett also makes an appearance.

In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of two films from Peter Jackson based on the famous book of the same name, Bilbo sets out with the thirteen Dwarves and Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug. Along the way he’ll come into contact with Gollum and, ultimately, take possession of Gollum’s “precious” Ring that will eventually determine the fate of Middle Earth.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in theaters everywhere in 2D and 3D on December 14, 2012. Watch the trailer below, followed by the new theatrical one-sheet poster.
