Sony and Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet brought in an estimated $11 million on its opening day Friday, approximately $500,000 of that coming from Thursday midnight screenings.
The Hornet’s tally was easily enough to secure first place in what will be an uncontested Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend at the box office. The closest competitor, Universal’s new comedy The Dilemma starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, only tickled up $6 million on Friday and will need business to pick up this weekend to reach $20 million through Sunday.
The Green Hornet should ring up between $25 and $30 million through Sunday and upwards of $40 million through Monday. The Dilemma will need a strong weekend to reach $20 million for its first three days in theaters.
Check back Sunday afternoon for the complete weekend box office results, expected to feature Oscar hopefuls The King’s Speech and Black Swan breaking into the top five.
