The Darkest Hour Trailer is Shocking

Summit Entertainment has provided a first look at The Darkest Hour, the upcoming 3D alien invasion flick in which five young people vacationing in Moscow find themselves in the middle of a deadly alien invasion.

Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella and Rachael Taylor headline the young cast that will be pitted against aliens which are, for the most part, invisible. To help wipe the earth clean of humans while stealing our energy, the aliens simply touch them and they vanish in a puff of gas.

Given the relatively low profile release, it’s hard not to draw comparisons between The Darkest Hour and last November’s lackluster alien invasion film, Skyline. There’s no big stars, the budget is likely minimal, it’s rated PG-13, and it’s a winter release rather than summer.

The notable difference between the two films is the writer. Skyline was written and directed by The Brothers Strause. The Darkest Hour was penned by Jon Spaihts, a relative newcomer who wrote the first draft of Prometheus for Ridley Scott.

The Darkest Hour is directed by Chris Gorak (Wanted) and opens in theaters everywhere in 3D on December 23, 2011.
