The Dark Knight Rises Joins the $1 Billion Box Office Club

The Dark Knight Rises Joins the $1 Billion Box Office ClubThe Dark Knight Rises got off to a rocky start after the Aurora, Colorado incident negatively impacted early box office business. Since then it has picked up steam and has become the thirteenth member of an elite club that a previous Christopher Nolan Batman outing is already a member of.

Over this past Labor Day weekend, The Dark Knight Rises crossed the $1 billion worldwide box office mark. Domestic ticket sales stand at $431.4 million and overseas business at $574 million, totaling $1.005 billion overall.

With the recent push to cross $1 billion, The Dark Knight Rises has surpassed The Dark Knight for 12th place on the all-time box office grossing films list. Next up in its sights is Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland at $1.024 billion.

How much further than The Dark Knight Rises actually rise? This past Friday through Sunday it earned an estimated $6.2 million and sixth place overall in North America, showing there is still plenty of giddyup in Batman’s legs. $500 million domestically could be a long shot, but breaching the top 10 all-time list by knocking out George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace at $1.027 billion is certainly within reach.

Historically September is the month where Warner Home Video announces a Blu-ray and DVD release date for Christopher Nolan’s Batman films. We have already explored those possibilities, but it is something that could potentially shift if The Dark Knight Rises continues to hang around at the box office.
