The Amazing Spider-Man rode a wave of positive buzz from trailers and promotions via Sony Pictures to open with an impressive $7.5 million at the North American box office from midnight screenings on Monday night.
Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans, and directed by appropriately named Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man is second to only Marvel’s The Avengers in midnight screenings this year (a whopping $18.5 million). That puts it in likely blockbuster territory, especially coming off last weekend when audiences flooded theaters to avoid the heat wave that continues to grip North America.
Approximately $1.2 million of the $7.5 million collected by The Amazing Spider-Man last night came from IMAX screens. That’s a great sign headed into the Fourth of July and this upcoming weekend as IMAX and 3D showings carry higher ticket prices that will help pad Spidey’s bottom line.
Through Sunday, The Amazing Spider-Man is expected to earn anywhere from $100 million per conservative estimates, to upwards of $120 million from its first six days of release. If The Avengers taught us anything earlier this summer , estimates for comic book movies are easily shattered if audiences like what they see and passionately spread the word.
Check back tomorrow for studio estimates on The Amazing Spider-Man’s first full day of release.
