Last week Paramount offered us our first look at the J.J. Abrams sequel Star Trek Into Darkness via what the studio referred to as a “trailer preview” that played more like a trailer unto itself. As it turns out that trailer is quite different than the one that showed up in theaters this past weekend, and earlier today Paramount released the “second” trailer online so we can watch it several times over.
This new trailer offers an extended look at Kirk (Chris Pine) and Bones (Karl Urban) being through red fauna on an alien planet by the planet’s inhabitants. This sequence is part of the nine minute IMAX sneak preview that is currently playing in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The Enterprise and her crew are reintroduced in the trailer, one-by-one, and each looks to take a beating throughout the course of the film. Benedict Cumberbatch’s still mysterious villain also makes his menacing presence felt, even while staring menacingly through the Enterprise’s brig.
Closing the trailer is the shot that hearkens back to The Wrath of Khan as someone, presumably Kirk but not necessarily consider the color of his sleeve, puts his hand against Spock’s (Zachary Quinto) hand through a pane of glass. This shot is similar to Spock’s death scene in the original cast’s timeline.
Star Trek Into Darkness beams into theaters on May 17, 2013.
