Square Enix Deus Ex Game Getting Film Adaptation at CBS Films

Square Enix Deus Ex Game Getting Film Adaptation at CBS FilmsThe Square Enix video game franchise Deus Ex is headed to the big screen with the acquisition of the film rights by CBS Films.

Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are attached to produce the film that will be based on the Deus Ex: Human Revolution game storyline. Deus Ex: Human Revolution served as a prequel to the original Deus Ex when released on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the PC last summer.

In the high-tech game, corporations run above the government in the year 2027 and neuroprosthetics are being put on humans to enhance their abilities. The protagonist is an ex-SWAT member whose body has been mostly replaced by the prostheses. He seeks to solve the mystery surrounding a brazen attack on a biotechnology firm responsible for the prostheses creation.

To create the film, CBS Films will work in conjunction with game developer Eidos Montreal, much in the same way Ubisoft is tapping its internal talent to bring Assassin’s Creed to the big screen.

Both producers are no strangers to projects with ties to the video game industry. Lee is currently working on Lego: The Piece of Resistance for Warner Bros., while Askarieh has the Square Enix games Just Cause, Kane and Lynch, and a sequel to Hitman on his plate for future development.

No timetable has been set for the Deux Ex film release.
