Columbia Pictures surprised no one today when announcing the upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise will be shot in 3D.
The move to 3D was widely speculated and anticipated after Sony and Columbia canned Spider-Man 4, replaced it with a reboot project and pushed the release date back a year. The additional time helped pave the way for a 3D treatment which will help bring in some extra dough with ticket surcharges for what is expected to be a modestly budgeted $80 million tentpole film.
Barring any unforeseen last minute issues, the Spider-Man reboot will be directed by Marc Webb of (500) Days of Summer fame. The role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man has yet to be cast despite Logan Lerman from Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Ligntning Thief commenting that he and the studios were in early talks and then backtracking over those remarks with a denial.
Also announced today is a July 3, 2012 release date for Spider-Man to take advantage of the big July 4th frame. Spidey won’t be alone, however. J.J. Abrams Star Trek 2 warps into theaters a week earlier on June 29 which sets up a possible record-breaking July 4th weekend battle royale.
