This year marks the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, a celebration that has already seen the release of the new television show Spartacus: Blood and Sand on Starz and will soon see Kubrick’s classic released on Blu-ray for the first time.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Spartacus: 50th Anniversary Edition starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier is coming to Blu-ray Disc on May 25. This marks the second appearance of Spartacus on high definition after it was previously released on HD DVD.
Whereas Spartacus on HD DVD was a bare bones release due to disc space limitations given the film’s 3-hour plus run time, the Blu-ray edition will benefit from the added disc storage space and include a number of bonus features as outlined below.
- Deleted Scenes
- Interview with Peter Ustinov
- Interview with Jean Simmons
- Behind-the-Scenes Footage
- Vintage Newsreels
- Theatrical Trailer
- Production Stills
- Concept Art
- Costume Designs
- Saul Bass Storyboards
- Posters & Print Ads

- BD Live
Spartacus: 50th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray carries an SRP of $26.98.
