The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn’t come out for another year and already Sony has locked up release dates for the third and fourth installments in the Marvel franchise.
In what may be considered a preemptive move against Marvel’s own scheduling plans, Sony announced that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will open on June 10, 2016. Two years later, The Amazing Spider-Man 4 will arrive on May 4, 2018. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, currently in production, opens on May 2, 2014.
By nabbing the early May time slot in 2018, Sony is sticking a stake in the exact weekend that Marvel and Disney love to drop big installments in its Avengers franchise. It was only five days ago when Marvel and Disney locked up May 6, 2016 and May 5, 2017 for untitled Marvel Phase 3 films. The Avengers 2 is set for release on May 1, 2015.
The ball is now in Disney and Marvel’s court. They obviously don’t want to go up against their own property which now resides at Sony in 2018. Considering Fox could jump in and lay claim to a 2018 date for another X-Men installment at any moment, I would think Disney and Marvel are seriously considering extending their long range plans out a year past 2017.
Andrew Garfield will be 35 years old when The Amazing Spider-Man 4 bows in 2018. That’s getting up there in age for the youthful Peter Parker which begs the question: will Sony consider a reboot after the fourth film, or will Peter Parker pass the suit and mask to a new young lad?
