Sony Beta Testing D-Box on Blu-ray

We first reported back on February 22 that Sony’s The 6th Day Blu-ray Disc release, due on April 8, would be the first from the studio to feature D-Box Motion Code. Neither Sony nor D-Box publicly commented or acknowledged an agreement to include D-Box on Sony titles, leaving us guessing if The 6th Day was an anomaly or sign of things to come.

Today D-Box issued a press release formally announcing a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that will allow D-Box Motion Code to appear on future Sony Blu-ray titles.

The announcement goes on to confirm The 6th Day is serving as a beta test for D-Box to presumably evaluate the feature’s performance in terms of use and sales. No additional titles are mentioned in the press release or have been announced by Sony that will include D-Box Motion Code.

We love the idea of D-Box Motion Code and what it can bring to fully experiencing a film on Blu-ray. But do you honestly know anyone who has the D-Box hardware to take advantage of this? We don’t, nor have we seen any Blu-ray Disc reviews on the Internet discuss the feature.

While it’s great to see D-Box spreading its wings across multiple publishers, our interest will remain minimal until the tools to take advantage of it are more readily available and actually affordable.
