Martin Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio’s fourth collaboration is on its way to being their most successful yet after Shutter Island nabbed an estimated $13.5 million at the Friday Box Office. If the film holds place, it should earn roughly $30-35 million through Sunday.
Paramount’s decision to hold back Shutter Island from its originally scheduled October 2009 release date appears to have been the right call. With no new competition, Shutter Island will easily beat the holdovers from Valentine’s Day weekend.
Speaking of Valentine’s Day, the film that share’s its name should come in second after making an estimated $5.6 million on Friday. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Avatar and The Wolf Man all earning $4 million or less Friday and are not expected to reach $20 million when the weekend is all said and done.
Check back Sunday for the complete weekend box office results.
