After a short-lived web game based on clues issued by Paramount, the first official trailer for Iron Man 2 dropped last night and brought with it much of the same sarcasm and action that made the first a blockbuster.
Surprisingly it also reveals quite a bit about the plot. Possible spoilers below so do not proceed reading if you have no interest in investigating the trailer’s scenes.
The trailer begins with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) at a hearing in Washington where the judge, played by Gary Shandling, is asking Stark to turn over the Iron Man designs to the American people. Stark refuses, but the trailer then cuts to Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) working on his own devilish designs clearly using Stark Industries blueprints as the foundation which suggests Stark loses the court case.
With the designs out in the open, another billionaire industrialist, Justin Hammer, is able to presumably build the War Machine armor and what appears to be an army of robots. Interviews with director Jon Favreau and the cast have indicated the relationship between Stark and War Machine operator James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) will be rocky, but the trailer ends with the duo clearly on the same team battling Hammer’s ‘bots.
What we do not know is what Hammer and/or Whiplash are ultimately after but it could tie into the Stark Expo which Iron Man visits in the trailer. An earlier official image showed Stark combing through his archives looking for clues his father may have left in past expos. I am purely speculating here but whatever Stark is looking for could be what Black Widow is after when she infiltrates Stark Industries.
