It’s hard not to cry foul after being exposed to the first spy photos snapped from the Toronto set of Jose Padilha’s RoboCop reboot.
The two photos show star Joel Kinnaman in some form of RoboCop suit, one with the helmet off between takes and one with it on apparently during a take as cameras roll. Rather than the clean metallic look of the old RoboCop that contrasted with the dirty city he policed, the new RoboCop is looking familiar in ways no one expected.
The all-black RocoCop armor is strikingly similar to Marvel’s Iron Man as seen in the Cinematic Universe played by Robert Downey Jr. Paint it up red, gold and silver and Iron Man would be ready for flight.
It also looks a lot like Christopher Nolan’s Batman played by Christian Bale. The flat black paint job is helping his comparison, as are the armored plates and form-fitting suit.
Keep this in mind before denouncing the new RoboCop as complete garbage based on these pics. We don’t know what version of the RocoCop armor this is. It is an early prototype or the final suit? We don’t know, but we do know the leaked suit calls for multiple versions.
We also don’t know if the suit will have CGI enhancements. These are raw images off the set. Chances are the final film won’t look exactly identical. Some of the first images of Robert Downey Jr. in his Iron Man suit snapped on the streets of Los Angeles weren’t exactly flattering either.
In addition to the first images of some version of Joel Kinnaman as RoboCop, a new vertical teaser banner has surfaced that adds some red accents to the design. You can also buy the original RocoCop Trilogy on Blu-ray at Amazon.com this week for only $15.99 as their Blu-ray Deal of the Week.
