Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Sets Sail with $35 Million

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides benefited from 3D screens, Johnny Depp and $4.7 million from Thursday midnight screenings to capture a $35 million opening day haul at the box office.

Though Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trails all three previous Pirates films through its first day, there’s still a slim chance it could top $100 million through Sunday if matinee showings are strong on both weekend days. The third film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, raked in $114.7 million through its first three days.

Overseas is a different story when it comes to the appeal of one Captain Jack Sparrow. Through two days, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has amassed $44.2 million with over $10 million of that coming from Russia alone. That total is $4 million ahead of the At World’s End pace and many international territories have yet to see the film open.

Elsewhere on Friday, Bridesmaids continues to thrive off word-of-mouth and came in second with $6.4 million. Not even with mighty Thor with the Warriors Three could top that as the latest Marvel superhero flick brought in $4.4 million.

Stop by tomorrow for the complete weekend box office studio estimates and to see if Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides reached the impressive $100 million opening weekend mark.
