Paramount Home Entertainment has officially announced Top Gun will make its Blu-ray bow on July 29, over a week after active pre-orders for the title popped up on Amazon.com.
If you recall, Paramount originally planned to release Top Gun on HD DVD as a special collector’s edition with an unknown number of supplementals. When the title arrived in stores, it did so as a “bare bones” release. Critics speculated this was due to a lack of disc space after including Dolby TrueHD audio, but the real reason never came out.
With more disc space and no room for excuses, Paramount has decided to include the previously planned HD DVD extras on Blu-ray Disc. The full list is as follows.
The big news is on the audio front where Paramount is taking a big step forward. Not only will Top Gun on Blu-ray include the same 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix from the HD DVD version, it will also include a 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix as well.
This is the first confirmation of Paramount using DTS-HD Master Audio on any high definition title; HD DVD or Blu-ray. We can only hope Paramount finds opportunities to utilize the favored audio format on additional titles in the near future.
Top Gun on Blu-ray will carry an SRP of $29.99. Check back regularly for high resolution cover art.
