An unexpected surprise showed up yesterday when Warner Bros. dropped Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim WonderCon trailer onto the web and with it a much more extended look at what’s in store for the summer blockbuster.
According to a brief text introduction by del Toro on YouTube, he bent to sharing the trailer online after hearing so many people ask to see more of the film than what has been shown thus far – which hasn’t been much. Whether the WonderCon trailer was indeed intended exclusively for WonderCon and del Toro and Warner Bros. had a change of heart or not isn’t important. The trailer is out, and it’s both epic and frustrating at the same time.
As the Pacific Rim trailer gets underway, we follow the two-man crew of the Gypsy Danger Jaeger robot as it gets ready to deploy. The head section drops onto the body and it’s time to do battle against a monstrous foe whom has arisen through a portal from the depths of the ocean.
This trailer really helps to convey the enormous scale of Pacific Rim that trumps just about everything before it. The Jaeger robots and Kaiju monsters are frightening massive in size, making cars look like breadcrumbs in their presence.
While the closing shot of a Jaeger using a massive ship as a baseball bat is insane in all the right ways, there’s a trend in the trailer where all the action scenes are taking place at night and in the rain. It’s almost impossible to make out details on the Kaiji other than the blue glowing parts of their body. I hope that the “brighter” scenes are being kept deliberately under wraps.
Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman and Charlie Day. The fun begins in 3D and IMAX on July 12.
