Nintendo Power to End its Run

Nintendo Power to End its RunNintendo Power, the longest running, fully-dedicated video game publication in the world, has reached the end of its storied publication run.

Originally reported by ars technica and seemingly confirmed by Nintendo Power senior editor Chris Hoffman, Nintendo has decided to not renew its partnership with Future US Publications, the publisher of The Official Xbox Magazine and The Official Playstation Magazine. This leaves Nintendo as the only one of the “big three” without a dedicated magazine.

Nintendo Power began in 1988 having been spun out of the Nintendo Fun Club newsletter. The magazine was originally published in-house at the Nintendo of America headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It began as a bi-monthly publication but later went monthly.

Each month, Nintendo Power would feature in-depth articles on Nintendo games and consoles, as well as contests, comics, fan art, and much more. Future US took over the publishing duties in 2007 and tried to push the magazine into a more mainstream publication, focusing on more than just first party titles.

Reportedly, Future US wanted to take Nintendo Power online, but Nintendo refused, choosing to kill the publication instead.

According to ars technica, Senior Editor Chris Hoffman tweeted that he was “sad to see it go,” and that the last issue would be “memorable,” among others. The tweets have since been removed.

As an original Nintendo Fun Club member, and long-time Nintendo Power subscriber, I am sad to see it go. As a game journalist, Nintendo Power was one of my biggest influences, and I will never forget getting the chance to tour the editorial offices at Nintendo of America in Washington back in 2005.
