Nintendo Cuts Wii Price; Dates New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Confirming rumors that began swirling earlier this weekend, Nintendo late last night officially announced the Nintendo Wii console including Wii Sports and a Wii Remote will sell for $200 instead of $250 beginning this Sunday, September 27.

The move is a direct response and strike at Microsoft and Sony who recently lowered the price of the Xbox 360 Elite and Playstation 3 consoles, respectively. Sony has already seen sales of PS3 consoles triple since the introduction of PS3 Slim at the lower price point.

Wii sales had finally begun to slow this year in part due to the flailing economy affecting the gaming industry. With the price cut, Wii could potentially – once again – become the hottest video game console this holiday season.

To bolster their Wii price cut announcement, Nintendo has dated New Super Mario Bros. Wii for a November 15 release. Bridging old school Mario games with modern multiplayer options, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is anticipated to be a huge seller.
