Nintendo is working on a new 2D side-scrolling Super Mario game that will be released exclusively on 3DS. You read that right; an old-school 2D side-scroller design that will be accompanied by 3D visuals.
The announcement came during Nintendo’s fiscal third quarter results yesterday from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. He stated the game would be “totally new” and not a revamped version of a previously released Mario side-scroller.
As for when we might see the game, Iwata offered a wide window of the company’s next fiscal year that runs from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013.
Considering new first-party 3DS titles revealed during E3 2011 including Animal Crossing, Paper Mario and Luigi’s Mansion 2 still don’t have a release date, the earliest I’d expect to see this new Mario game on shelves would be just before Christmas. A first quarter 2013 release seems more like as this holiday season could be dominated by the aforementioned titles.
