Lionsgate acknowledged only 50 days remaining until The Hunger Games begins this theatrical run by sharing a new The Hunger Games trailer to further fuel the hype and anticipation.
Running roughly just over a minute in length, more than half the length of a traditional two-and-a-half minute trailer, this new collection of footage plays like a barrage of scenes mixed with previously released footage and all-new goodies. The new stuff starts with Katniss (Jennifer) bonding with her sister Primrose (Willow Shields) by giving her the Mockingjay pin for protection. As the trailer goes on to show, the protection Primrose needs will come from the ultimate sacrifice of Katniss.
As the trailer moves to the Capitol, there are several new shots of Katniss, as she and her fellow selected Tributes are paraded around prior to the deadly games commencing. In speaking with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Katniss says she can’t afford to think the way he does – that if his fate of death is already decided, he wants to die being himself and not who the Capitol wants him to be.
The actual games footage is limited to a shot of the Tributes running out the gate into the arena, and Katniss being startled by a flaming, falling tree. Both scenes were featured in previous clips and teasers, so almost all of the actual games combat portion of the film will be all-new when the film finally arrives.
The Hunger Games, the first of four upcoming films based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling young adult book series, opens in theaters and IMAX on March 23. The IMAX showings will be limited to one week only, and are all but certain to sell out quickly as word spreads and pre-sales begin.
