Paramount has dropped a new trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation that further cements its links to the animated series Renegades and lays waste to another Western European city.
The sequel aspect of G.I. Joe: Retaliation has Zartan still impersonating the President of the United States and using that position of power to launch a strike against the G.I. Joes. Cobra Commander is still imprisoned, though looks to get sprung by a healed and vengeful Storm Shadow.
Zartan’s strike against G.I. Joe is the reboot aspect as it wipes out seemingly the entire team except for Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), Flint (D.J. Cotrona) and Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki), all of whom leap into a well to avoid the deadly attack. Snake Eyes also survives, though it seems as if he was elsewhere when the strike occurred. Duke appears to be killed in action, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he pops up again before the film is over.
With Cobra Commander free and the Joes seemingly eliminated, Cobra installs itself as a new security force to protect the U.S. Government. In reality we all know Cobra Commander is hellbent on world domination, so this is only a ruse to gain power.
The unexpected scene in the G.I. Joe: Retaliation shows a Cobra-controlled satellite launch a missile at London that destroys at least a portion of the city. In G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the Eiffel Tower was taken out in a similar nefarious strike. Does Cobra have something against Western Europe? Either they do, or Paramount is using a similar tactic to speak to the same international crowd that helped G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra earn big worldwide box office bucks.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, DD.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Ray Stevenson, Elodie Yung and Byung-hun Lee. The Cobra retaliation begins on June 29.
