Many followers of Pixar’s esteemed animation legacy feel the studio veered off course with the 2006 film Cars. The juvenile humor and especially dimwitted Mater rubbed adults the wrong way.
Kids of course ate Cars up and continue to coerce their parents into buying the latest Lightning McQueen and Mater toy repaints, bed sheets and a myriad of other licensed products. Cars has been such a big licensing hit that Disney and Pixar are dipping into the well again with Cars 2 to keep the revenue stream flowing.
This latest trailer for Cars 2 paints a picture that will once again rub adult Pixar fans the wrong way. The juvenile humor is out in full force and now accompanied by potty humor. Literally. As in twice in this trailer. Then there’s the plot which finds Mater, Lightning and the gang accidentally caught up in a super secret spy conspiracy of some sort. It’s the type of storytelling you’d expect to find on Nick Jr. for preschoolers.
Cars 2 is sure to be a hit and I’ll be certain to take my kids to it. With each new trailer or clip my personal interest in seeing it continues to evaporate.
Cars 2 opens in 2D and 3D on June 24.
