Max Payne 3 is loaded with clues and golden guns collectibles to track down and locate. After fending off all the enemies in the immediate area first, of course.
In total there are 149 collectibles to track down and find in Max Payne 3. They are split between Clues, found when examining objects – even corpses – while playing through the campaign, and Golden Gun parts, which assembled unlock one of many Golden Guns in the game.
Each of Max Payne 3’s 14 chapters includes either one or two unlockable Golden Guns which have been split into three parts. By the end of each chapter you should have at least a couple new shiny weapons to add to your arsenal and begin using immediately. These Golden Guns parts literally jump off the screen with their glow so they are easy to spot, assuming you know where off the beaten path to look for them.
Likewise, there are Clues to discover in every Max Payne 3 chapter as well. These are much harder to find since there is no blinking marker on the map showing where they are. Without a guide you’ll have no idea where they are or how many exist. You would literally have to inspect every square inch of every level looking for items to examine.
The following Max Payne 3 Clues and Golden Guns parts locations guide is designed to help you find where all these cool hidden collectibles are located, chapter-by-chapter. There are written instructions to finding them, as well as some useful video tutorials pulled off YouTube. Good luck.
Chapter 1: Something Rotten In the Air (3 Golden Gun Parts, 2 Clues)
Finding all three Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden PT92 weapon.
Golden Gun Part 1: Upon completion of the tutorial, scour the left side of the game’s first corridor and find the Golden Gun part between two columns against a wall.
Celebrity Magazine Clue: In a living room with white carpet and a white sofa with lounge, the Celebrity Magazine clue is sitting on the dark coffee table in front of the sofa.
Golden Gun Part 2: After exiting the building’s elevator, check the right side of the lobby area near the windows with the plants in front of them. The Golden Gun part is out in the open on the floor.
Golden Gun Part 3: Once you’re down in the parking garage, head into the area where the B01 parking spot is (in a corner). You’ll find the Golden Gun part on the ground in this parking spot.
Dropped Photo Clue: As you make your way out of the garage, walk the center yellow line until you see the Dropped Photo sitting right on it.
Chapter 2: Nothing But the Second Best (6 Golden Gun Parts, 6 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden Mini-30 rifle.
Golden Gun Part 1: When you start this chapter, you’ll be under a DJ desk with turntables and speakers on it. Climb up to it, then find the Golden Gun part just behind the desk on the floor.
Golden Gun Part 2: The second gun part is over in the VIP area of the club, on the floor right behind the curved bar.
Dead Soccer Star Clue: Still in the VIP section, locate the brightly lit stairs that head up. There’s a small table and couch near the bottom of the stairs on the left. The Dead Soccer Star clue is the dead guy with the white shirt.
Night-Club Flyer Clue: Right on the other side from the previous clue in the VIP area is the same bar the Golden Gun part was behind. The Night-Club Flyer is on the top of the right side of the bar.
Golden Gun Part 3: Another DJ desk, this one in the next part of the club that is heavily lit with the color purple. The Golden Gun part is on the floor right behind the DJ desk.
Ex-Cop Clue: From the previous area you will enter a bathroom area with three doors, two of which are occupied. The free bathroom is where the Ex-Cop clue is hiding out.
Torn Dress Piece Clue: In the same bathroom area, turn to the right and find this clue on the floor in front of the sink.
Portuguese Newspaper Clue: When you get into the kitchen area, look for the big stainless steel sink. The Portuguese Newspaper is just to the left of the sink, in front of an old boombox.
Golden Gun Part 4: Just past the kitchen is the club lounge with red lantern lights overhead. Walk the floor around the tables and find the Golden Gun part sitting on one of the tables.
Golden Gun Part 5: As you make your way off the roof from the helicopter scene, you’ll pass a small circular area with a white couch. The Golden Gun is on the floor to the left of the couch.
Golden Gun Part 6: Complete the Golden Mini-30 rifle up on the roof by going behind the large red sign and finding it on the back corner on the ground.
Giovanna’s Necklace Clue: After the roof chase is complete, you are forced to head down a stairwell. On the way down you can’t miss Giovanna’s Necklace, sitting on the ground between two flights of stairs.
Chapter 3: Just Another Day at the Office (6 Golden Gun Parts, 4 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden M2A1 and the Golden M10.
Picture of Victor Clue: Complete the stadium ambush and enter the office that has the picture of two men shaking hands. Examine the picture to pick up the Picture of Victor clue.
Blood Stained Door Clue: While following Passos, be on the lookout for a white double-door with yellow and blue stripes. Examine the door to collect the Blood Stained Door clue.
Golden Gun Part 1: In the trashed recording room, find the Golden Gun part on the floor to the left of where a camera on a tripod has been toppled onto a computer desk.
Golden Gun Part 2: When you head into the souvenirs room, find the large mural of a football team on the wall, and the Golden Gun part is on the table just in front of the mural.
Blood Stained Hallway Clue: As you make your way through the stadium, you’ll encounter a pesky sniper. Escape him, then spot a circular half-column on the wall with blood on it. Examine it to get the Blood Stained Hallway clue.
Golden Gun Part 3: Down near the stadium pitch, on the front row of seats, lies the next Golden Gun part in clear sight on the ground.
Golden Gun Part 4: In the luxury suite with tropies, you’ll find the final Golden Gun part for the Golden M10 sitting on one of the front row cushy seats.
Soccer Star Memorial Clue: Adjacent to the previous clue is a memorial dedicated to Claudio. Examine it for the Soccer Star Memorial clue.
Golden Gun Part 5: Up in the tribue area of the stadiums, Passos will cover you will you try to escape. When heading down a flight of stairs during this sequence, poke around the left side of the wall to find this Golden Gun part on the ground.
Golden Gun Part 6: Wrap up building the Golden M2A1 by dodging the final sniper in the IT tower. It’s at the end of a seat row after you head up a flight of stairs.
Chapter 4: Anybody Can Buy Me A Drink (9 Golden Gun Parts, 3 Clues)
Finding all nine Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden 1911 revolver, Golden M500 shotgun and the Golden SAF 40 CAL SMG.
Golden Gun Part 1: You start this chapter in a bar and the first Golden Gun part is on the floor just to the right of the doors with the exit sign above them.
Golden Gun Part 2: Head up the stairs in the bar and find an area in the back left side. The next Golden Gun part is on the floor in this small and shallow corridor.
Golden Gun Part 3: You’ll exit the bar down some stairs. The final piece of the Golden 1911 revolver is underneath the same stairs you just came down.
Max’s NYPD Badge Clue: You will find Max’s NYPD Badge on the small table by the window in his apartment.
Golden Gun Part 4: Check the ground just to the left of the previous clue to find the first Golden Gun part of the M500 shotgun.
Brewer’s Journal Clue: A neighbor in Max’s apartment building will make the ultimate sacrifice to save you. Scope out his apartment to find the Brewer’s Journal clue on his workbench.
Newspaper Clippings Clue: In the same neighbor’s apartment, find the Newspaper Clippings clue tacked on the wall near the bathroom.
Golden Gun Part 5: On your way out of the apartment building, head into an apartment closest to the stairs. It’s fairly destroyed, but you’ll find the Golden Gun part on the floor to the left of what was the kitchen.
Golden Gun Part 6: Up on the roof, from the point at which you came out onto the roof, make a series of rights until you find the Golden Gun part on the ground.
Golden Gun Part 7: Upon completion of the water tower quick-time event, ignore Passos’ suggestion on where to go next and hang a left. When you reach the end of the roof, look around for the next Golden Gun part on the ground.
Golden Gun Part 8: Finish the Golden M500 shotgun on the second floor of the blown out building. There’s a somewhat hidden hall behind a wall where the Golden Gun part is hiding.
Golden Gun Part 9: The final piece of the Golden SAF 40 CAL SMG is found just beyond the garage, in an office on the table.
Chapter 5: Alive If Not Exactly Well (6 Golden Gun Parts, 6 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden LMG .30 rifle and the Golden Micro 9MM SMG.
Parked Helicopter Clue: The only catch here is after you spot the obvious helicopter that is behind a fence, know that you can make your examination without getting past the fence.
Ransom Note Clue: In an office where a recording of Fabiana is ready to be watched, find the Ransom Note clue on the desk.
Golden Gun Part 1: After leaving the second hangar, you’ll run across a huge pile of old crates. Up in the middle is the Golden Gun part, and you’ll need to climb the crates to reach it.
Video Camera Clue: The next hangar is where Fabiana was tortured. Examine the video camera used to record the event to uncover the Video Camera clue.
Golden Gun Part 2: Leave the torture hangar and head around to the right until you see a fence. The Golden Gun part is to the right side of the fence.
Golden Gun Part 3: Wrap up assembling the Golden Micro 9MM SMG in the area where Fabiana gets dragged from. Its on the end of a platform, up above and to the right of the old boats.
Branco Family Photo Clue: Head down into what looks like a break room from the previous area. There’s a table to the left, and the Branco Family Photo clue is on the table.
Boathouse Newspaper Clue: The next building you enter will have a poker table and a couple chairs. The Boathouse Newspaper clue is on the table.
Nightclub Floor Plans Clue: From the poker table, look around and find the closest room. Inside the room is another table with the Nightclub Floor Plans clue on top of it.
Golden Gun Part 4: Head to the building’s backroom and find the Golden Gun part in the big container that is open.
Golden Gun Part 5: Down by the docks, and after you go past them, you’ll find a shack with an open door. The Golden Gun part is just inside.
Golden Gun Part 6: Finish the Golden LMG .30 rifle just after activating the walkway. Follow the docks around to the left until they end, and the Golden Gun part will be at your feet.
Chapter 6: A Dame, A Dork, and a Drunk (3 Golden Gun Parts, 5 Clues)
Finding all three Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden MD-97L rifle.
Golden Gun Part 1: From the main area where you begin, check the smallest office to the left. The Golden Gun part is on the floor behind the desk and chair.
File on Fabiana Clue: Exit the previous office and head into the small office on the right. The File on Fabiana clue is on the desk.
Rodrigo’s Email Clue: In the same office is a small table near the door. Rodrigo’s Email clue is on this table.
Architectural Models Clue: The conference room with huge windows as Architectural Models, and the model on the left has the Architectural Models clue.
Golden Gun Part 2: After chatting with Bronco in a small garden inside the building, find the Golden Gun part on top of a wooden walkway.
School Pictures Clue: As you head through a hallway from the previous location, look on the right for three pictures on the wall. Examine them as the School Pictures clue.
Golden Gun Part 3: The final Golden MD-97L rifle is down in the lobby, behind the glass of an architectural model.
Dead IT Guy Clue: At the chapter’s end, you’ll escape an explosion and take down the terrorist. The poor Dead IT Guy in the white shirt from the beginning is on the floor, and he’s the final chapter clue.
Chapter 7: A Hangover Sent Direct From Mother Nature (6 Golden Gun Parts, 9 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden SPAS-15 rifle and Golden Sawn-Off Shotgun.
Ex-Cop Clue: Walk around the streets where the chapter begins and you’ll encounter the same cop from the bathroom in chapter one. Like then, he’s the Ex-Cop clue you seek. Talk to him to get the clue.
Photo of Serrano Clue: You’ll have a soda on the couch with Wilson in the strip bar. He’ll leave the Photo of Serrano clue behind on the floor right in front of the same sofa.
Golden Gun Part 1: Head into the bathroom of the strip bar and the Golden Gun part is in the wide open stall.
Tourist Clue 1: Finally, the first tourist clue. This guy is hiding under a bed in the room closest to the exit.
Lower Gang Spray Tag Clue: Making your way down the streets, be on the lookout for when you come upon blue double-doors. To the left is graffiti, and examining it unlocks the Lower Gang Spray Tag clue.
Golden Gun Part 2: More hangars, but be aware of just after a quick-time event in this one. Look for rooms on the left side as one of them as the Golden Gun part on the floor.
Golden Gun Part 3: In the same hangar, you’ll find four or five crates on the other side. The Golden Gun part is just behind them.
Golden Gun Part 4: After exiting the hangar, be on the lookout for an area with some old metal platforms. The Golden Gun part is right next to them.
Middle Gang Spray Tag clue: In this same area is some graffiti of three guys on the wall. Examine it for the Middle Gang Spray Tag clue.
Golden Gun Part 5: Complete the Golden SPAS-15 rifle just after you must leap from a ledge. Look around below for a shrine to Claudio, and the Golden Gun part is on the other end of the same street.
Shrine to Claudio Clue: That same shrine you just used to find the Golden Gun part is the same one you need to examine for the Shrine to Claudio clue.
Flyer of Giovanna Clue: Complete the roofs and when you jump down, exit through the door. Look on the ground to the right for the Flyer of Giovanna clue on the ground.
Bag of Oxidado Clue: Enter the house where the gang is having a party. There are drugs strewn across the table that are the Bag of Oxidado clue.
Upper Gang Spray Tag Clue: Outside of the house with all the drugs is another graffiti painting, this one with a skull flanked by guns. Examine it for the Upper Gang Spray Tag clue.
Golden Gun Part 6: After you escape capture, you must exit the courtyard up a flight of stairs. The Golden Gun part that completes the Golden Sawn-Off Shotgun is to the left of the stairs.
Chapters 1-8 Collectibles Guide
Chapter 8: Ain’t No Reprievement Gonna Be Found (6 Golden Gun Parts, 3 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden Auto 9MM and the Golden 608 Bull.
Golden Gun Part 1: Your in the past now, and you have just caught up with Passos in a cemetary. Find the two crypts to the right of the stairs, and the Golden Gun part in front of the right crypt.
Valerie’s Tombstone Clue: Go up those same stairs, then through an iron gate. To the right is a tall gravestone which is the Valerie’s Tombstone clue.
Golden Gun Part 2: Follow Passos and you’ll come upon a tall mausoleum on a circular base. The Golden Gun part is on the right side of it.
Golden Gun Part 3: Next you’ll come upon urns on either side of you. Look at the ones on the right, and where one should be is the Golden Gun part.
Golden Gun Part 4: This Golden Gun part is on the ground next to a sarcophagus that is surrounded by columns in a circular pattern.
Nicole Mausoleum Clue: Near the previous clue is a mausoleum that says home on it. Examine the Nicole Mausoleum for the clue.
Vinnie’s Tombstone Clue: This tombstone marked Vincent Cognitti sticks out because it has just been built and looks brand new. It is just after the cut-scene with Max digging a grave.
Golden Gun Part 5: Complete the Golden Auto 9MM in the first building you can enter during your escape, after you see your grave spot. The Golden Gun part is on the floor in front of a sink.
Golden Gun Part 6: The final Golden 608 Bull part and chapter collectible is in the church behind where the preacher would stand.
Chapter 9: Here I Was Again, Halfway Down the World (6 Golden Gun Parts, 3 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden M972 SMG and Golden DE .50 pistol.
Dead Gang Members Clue: This one is easy; enter the first building and there’s a shirtless dead guy slouched against the wall. He’s the Dead Gang Member’s clue.
Golden Gun Part 1: Make your way down a flight of stairs and spot an open house to the left with two floors, the bottom one painted green. The front door has the Golden Gun part in front of it.
Dead UFE Members Clue: Another dead guy clue, in an alley as you leave the previous area. The Dead UFE Members clue is the body slumped on the stairs to the right.
Golden Gun Part 2: Enter the next building where a spooked woman runs from you. In her bathroom is the Golden Gun part.
Golden Gun Part 3: Exit the building after you plunge through the roof after the helicopter quick-time event. Work your way down this narrow street and find the Golden Gun part on the ground toward the end of it.
Dead Residents Clue: The next dead clue is just after you fight cops that you encounter near the previous Golden Gun part. There is a body on the ground near the tiger graffiti. Examine it for the Dead UFE Member’s clue.
Golden Gun Part 4: After the next cut-scene showing residents being escorted, you are dumped into a backyard with some bushes. There are tires in the bushes and the Golden Gun part is behind them.
Golden Gun Part 5: Finish the Golden M972 SMG near the house with a green doormat. Head across this home’s porch and find the Golden Gun part on the ground in the yard’s corner.
Golden Gun Part 6: The Golden DE .50 is completed after you head cross a balcony and across a wooden walkway. There’s a room behind some bars that can be accessed from the side. The Golden Gun part is on the floor of the room.
Chapter 10: It’s Drive or Shoot, Sister (6 Golden Gun Parts, 2 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden M4 Super 90 shotgun and the Golden FAL rifle.
Golden Gun Part 1: As the chapter begins, shot the bus without a roof. The Golden Gun part is inside the bus in plain sight.
Office Newspaper Clue: In the next area, there’s an office next to the iron fence and gates. The Office Newspaper clue is on a desk inside this office.
Golden Gun Part 2: There’s a small office inside the garage. Inside on the middle of the floor is the Golden Gun part.
Golden Gun Part 3: Just outside the paint booth is a work area with a workbench. Find the Golden Gun part on the bench before following Giovanna up the stairs.
Golden Gun Part 4: Another bus, this one in much better condition. The Golden Gun part is in the rear of the bus.
Golden Gun Part 5: The final Golden M4 Super 90 shotgun part is in the next building, second floor in a corner office on a small table near the desk.
Ad Campaign Poster Clue: Head down the stairs from the office and find a poster on the wall with a lady in red, next to a bus line poster. This is the Ad Campaign Poster clue when examined.
Golden Gun Part 6: The final Golden FAL rifle part is in a ground floor office with several computers, next to a toppled over red chair.
Chapter 11: It’s Drive or Shoot, Sister (6 Golden Gun Parts, 8 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden AK-47 and the Golden Super Sport.
Notes on Max Clue: You’ll start in your room on a ship. In the room on the other side of yours is the Notes on Max clue on a bookcase next to the bathroom.
Passos’ Bed Clue: When you’re in Passos’ room with the flag on the wall, his clue is right on the bed.
Golden Gun Part 1: In the ship’s kitchen, the Golden Gun part is on the floor next to a fridge/freezer combo.
Blood Trail Clue: When you open the hatch on the boat’s bow, there is a blood stain on the floor. Examine it for the Blood Trail clue.
Golden Gun Part 2: Head up to the boat’s deck and on the right side of the main windows, at a dead end, is the Golden Gun part.
Discarded Newspaper Clue: In the swanky room where the pirates are tearing apart a wall, there’s a circular table in the middle where the Discarded Newspaper clue sits atop.
Pried Wall Clue: It’s obvious, but where the pirates just mangled the wall should be examined for the Pried Wall clue.
Daphne’s Passport Clue: Make your way down the next hallway and enter the first room on the right. The Daphne’s Passport clue is atop the table in this room.
Daphne’s Jewelry Box Clue: In the bedroom area of this same room is the Daphne’s Jewelry Box clue, being lit from above.
Golden Gun Part 3: Up near the bridge, but before you enter it, is painting on the wall. Remove the painting to reveal a safe that houses the Golden Gun part.
Golden Gun Part 4: On the docks, head toward the big white crane and find the Golden Gun on the ground next to the blue and white building behind it.
Golden Gun Part 5: Exit the docks and you’ll come across the entrance to a terminal building. The final piece of the Golden Super Sport is just to the right of the entrance.
Golden Gun Part 6: Complete the Golden AK-47 up on the second level of the terminal entrance past the security door, sitting on a balcony visible when you look back over the railing.
Visitor Center Display Clue: In the exploration room of the same building are two mannequins surveying. Examine them for the Visitor Center Display clue.
Chapter 12: The Great American Savior of the Poor (6 Golden Gun Parts, 6 Clues)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden RPG and the Golden FMP G3S rifle.
Gurney Clue: There are two black gurneys just sitting there right as you start the chapter. Examine them for the Gurney clue.
Ammo Crate Clue: Move forward into the deposit and into the first room on the left with fence walls and a door. You need to examine the crate marked ‘Unidade De Forcas Especiais’ for the Ammo Crate clue.
Golden Gun Part 1: Up on the second floor of the same building is a nasty bathroom. On the ground of it is the Golden Gun part.
Golden Gun Part 2: While traversing the second floor, be aware of small rooms on the right of the main hallway. One of them has a black crate, and behind that crate is the Golden Gun part.
Wall Photos Clue: You will eventually reach a ledge and be forced into a side room. Inside this room are pictures on the wall that are the Wall Photos clue.
Passos’ ID Card Clue: This same room has a table next to a couch, and under that table is the Passos’ ID Card clue.
Golden Gun Part 3: Make your way to the next floor and look for a hole blown in a wall. Beyond the wall is the Golden Gun part on the floor.
Golden Gun Part 4: Up on the third floor, near the exit, is the Golden Gun part behind a half-wall, just across from the restroom.
Newspaper Article Clue: You will know when you are in the restaurant, so check the bar for the Newspaper Article clue on top of it.
Golden Gun Part 5: The last Golden FMP G3S rifle clue is up on the next floor, next to an old brown recliner that has seen better days.
Donation Receipt Clue: This clue is on a shelf that has yellow warning tape across it, in the room where you find the C4.
Golden Gun Part 6: Wrap the Golden RPG assembly just after you take out the snipers; it’s next to a battered balcony off from the building’s entrance.
Chapter 13: A Fat Bald Dude with a Bad Temper (9 Golden Gun Parts, 7 Clues)
Finding all nine Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden MPK SMG, Golden Law and the Golden G6 Commando rifle.
Golden Gun Part 1: After leaving the first area, you’ll come into a prison. Look on the left for the Golden Gun part next to a dead body.
Golden Gun Part 2: In the prison showers, look around the walls for the Golden Gun part up against one.
Tourist Clue: While moving through the prison, you’ll encounter a tourist in a cell. Talk to him to get the Golden Gun part.
Prison Log Clue: Move forward through some police resistance and find an office with a laptop on a table at the end of it. This is the Prison Log clue.
Golden Gun Part 3: While in the police station garage, spot the green dumpster in the corner and the Golden Gun part just behind it.
Golden Gun Part 4: Exit the police station and look right. There’s a half-wall and the Golden Gun part is just on the other side of it.
Golden Gun Part 5: Back in the police station, in the shower area near the training room is where the Golden Gun part sits on the ground.
Golden Gun Part 6: When in the kitchen, which is off the main path you travel, look under the cash register table for the Golden Gun part.
Promissory Note Clue: Across from the kitchen is an office with a desk that has the Promissory Note clue on top of it.
Golden Gun Part 7: The final piece of the Golden G6 Commando rifle is in the next office on the ground, the office marked ‘Cartorios S.I.G.’
Golden Gun Part 8: Complete the Golden MPK SMG next, finding its last part in the lobby on the right side of the conference room.
Political Folder Clue: Up on the 5th floor, enter the second room on the right side of the hallway. There’s a paper on a desk that is the Political Folder clue.
E-File on Da Silva Clue: Off the same hall but on the left is an office, with the E-File on Da Silva clue being the lone laptop.
Slide Show Clue: The next area you enter is a briefing room that requires a key card. There’s another laptop in the room’s corner that is the Slide Show clue.
Flak Vest Clue: In the arsenal is a flak vest on a hanger. Examine it to get the Flak Vest clue.
Golden Gun Part 9: The final Golden Gun part that completes the Golden Law is in the target room on the left side, behind some sand bags.
Chapter 14: One Card Left to Play (6 Golden Gun Parts, 1 Clue)
Finding all six Golden Gun parts will unlock the Golden Rotary Grenade Launcher and Golden RPD.
Golden Gun Part 1: Get up on the luggage mover near the B4 sign, then find the Golden Gun part up on the top of the platform.
Golden Gun Part 2: Up on the second floor from where you just were, find the next Golden Gun part to the right of the door.
Ex-Cop Clue: Find a bathroom with a soldier guarding its entrance. Inside the stall is the ex-cop again, yielding the Ex-Cop clue.
Golden Gun Part 3: In the same bathroom, but in the showers, is the final piece of the Golden Rotary Grenade Launcher.
Golden Gun Part 4: In the terminal, up on the catwalk second floor, the Golden Gun piece is in front of the taped-off door.
Golden Gun Part 5: The next Golden Gun piece is behind a small terminal service desk with a computer monitor on top of it.
Golden Gun Part 6: Complete all the Max Payne 3 collectibles by searching the train you raced against, just after you jump to it. The Golden Gun part that completes the Golden RPD is in the back corner of the train.
Chapters 9-14 Collectibles Guide
