Man of Steel is only a few weeks away from returning Superman to the big screen, and in 3D for the first time no less. Warner Bros. has distributed numerous trailers and TV spots dating back to last year, but none are as impacting as presumably the final trailer released this week.
In the new trailer that is timed to debut theatrically with The Hangover Part III this weekend, Superman’s (Henry Cavill) enemy General Zod (Michael Shannon) comes to planet earth looking for the former resident of Krypton. He announces himself to the world in every conceivable language, a scene that depicts mankind’s first contact with extraterrestrial life. Not counting Clark Kent, that is.
At this point in the film it is presumed that the world has not been introduced in Superman. Or if they have, they don’t yet know that he hails from another planet. The arrival of aliens will forever change mankind and earth and, we hope, open the door for the Justice League franchise to sprout a bud and blossom in the future.
Unlike previous trailers that spent a good portion of their runtime looking at Clark Kent as a child while under the guardianship of Ma and Pa Kent (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner, respectively), this last look at the film before it releases cranks up the action and doesn’t let up. Superman, Zod and Faora (Antje Traue), Zod’s acquaintance, partake in some epic battles that put anything else the “Man of Steel” has been involved with on the big or small screen to shame.
As if nearly indestructible flying humanoid aliens fighting above and through a city wasn’t enough, General God has got himself a big spaceship that can wreak some serious havoc. The quick glimpses of this thing that we’ve been given make it look incredibly menacing. No human army would be able to take it on, hence the need for Superman.
Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel opens in 2D and 3D everywhere on June 14.
