AMC’s Mad Men returns for its sixth season tonight by taking over the coveted time slot vacated this past Sunday by the ratings wonder The Walking Dead. Tonight’s Season 6 premiere episode ‘The Doorway’ is a two-hour, two-parter that begins the march toward the seventh and final season of the acclaimed drama. Before looking forward into the future of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, let’s look back and quickly recap the key events of the Season 5 finale that seems as if it aired eons ago. The big news concerns Don Draper’s fidelity which appeared to be cracked in the final scene when a woman at a bar asks him if he was alone and he answered yes. He and Megan’s marriage are suffering from her quest to become a Hollywood star, and Don’s rope is about burnt through when it comes to the lack of attention he has been receiving.
Don also has the death of Lane Pryce hanging over his head after the recently fired partner hung himself. With Lane out of the picture and Peggy Olson having left the firm to join a competitor of all places, Joan has slept her way into a more powerful position within the firm and while she scored a huge account, Don never approved of the means she used to get it.
As evidenced by set photos that went public last year, Don and Megan will kick off Season 6 while vacationing in Hawaii. We may never know what happened between Don and the woman at the bar, or maybe it will come up at some point should Don and Megan’s relationship really take a turn for the worst. Even if Hawaii is therapeutic for the pair, the vacation certainly won’t last forever.
The official synopsis for tonight’s episode states that Don will spearhead a new campaign, Betty will take in a houseguest, and Roger will receive some unsettling news. That’s pretty vague as far as a synopsis for a two-hour premiere goes, so there should be some good surprises waiting in the wings.
Tonight’s Mad Men: Season 6 two-hour premiere ‘The Doorway’ start time is at 9/8c exclusively on AMC. There is no official free online live streaming version of the episode to watch as it airs in high definition. However, given the episode is a fresh new season premiere, the odds are favorable that AMC will offer a free official online streaming version of the episode either very late tonight or tomorrow morning. It just won’t be live.
