Fox moved up the opening of Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in hopes of generating some additional business before Sony’s Grown Ups hits theaters this Friday. Maybe they shouldn’t have.
Mixed to positive reviews and a big marketing push weren’t enough for Cruise to even dent Toy Story 3’s domination at the box office on Wednesday. At the completion of its opening day, Knight and Day accumulated roughly $3.8 million in ticket sales. Toy Story 3 essentially tripled that amount with nearly $14 million in comparison. Buzz and Woody kicked Tom Cruise’s ass.
Knight and Day was a hopeful comeback vehicle for Cruise whose public image has been shaky for several years. With that idea officially nixed, Cruise’s next chance and better odds come with J.J. Abrams’ Mission Impossible 4.
