Microsoft’s Kinect motion control device for Xbox 360 was a hot seller this past holiday season, forcing Microsoft to up production numbers to meet swelling consumer demand. Now three months removed from the holidays, Kinect has continued to sell so well that it has earned Microsoft a spot in the Guinness World Records.
Today Microsoft’s Kinect became the “Fastest Selling Consumer Electronics Device” during its march to 10 million units sold for a cool $1.5 billion in revenue. More specifically, 8 million Kinects were rung up at cash registers in the device’s first 60 days than any other device in history. An average of 133,333 Kinect’s were sold per day to achieve this remarkable record-breaking pace.
To put Kinect’s explosive sales numbers in perspective, it outsold popular devices and former record holders in Apple’s iPad and iPhone. Gaz Deaves, Gaming Editor for Guinness World Records, promises his team has performed extensive research to confirm Microsoft has swiped the record away from Apple.
With Kinect hardware sales came software sales which Microsoft confirmed today also reached the 10 million mark. This number does not include Kinect Adventures which shipped with each Kinect device.
The 2011 edition of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition will include the Kinect “Fastest Selling Consumer Electronics Device” record. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the next challenger in Apple’s iPad 2 is just around the corner.
