Kick-Ass Atop Friday Box Office Results

Kick-Ass busted into theaters on Friday and earned an estimated $7.6 million, easily enough for first place but not quite the ass-kicking debut distributor Lionsgate had hoped for.

A $20 million weekend is forecast if Kick-Ass keeps its current pace through Sunday, far less than the $30+ million opening that was expected. Strong word of mouth from Friday showings might stimulate additional ticket sales on Saturday and Sunday pushing the final weekend number higher.

In second place is Sony’s Death at a Funeral with around $5.5 million, again below estimates. Weekend totals should come in between $15 and $17 million or less than the $20+ million tracking had indicated.

Third place went to Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey at $5.4 million. How to Train Your Dragon continues to perform strong with a $4.4 million fourth place finish while Clash of the Titans rang up a mortal $4.3 million.
